Arclight India is an innovative project with the purpose of reducing childhood blindness in India.
My name is Hugo Jobst, and I am a Medical Student at the University of Glasgow. During an 8-month expedition throughout India, I will organise and deliver grass-roots training to midwives and nurses with the Arclight Ophthalmoscope, sharing with them with the skills and equipment needed to fight preventable blindness.
80% of blindness can be cured or prevented, but the people most in need of care are often out of reach of hospitals and clinics.
Developed at St Andrews, the Arclight is an innovative, solar powered diagnostic device for examining the eyes and ears. Importantly, due to is durability and low production costs, it is designed to be accessible to areas of low resource.
Equipping primary level healthcare workers with the Arclight can give many more children the best chance at a fair start to life.
